Exceptional Graduate Faculty Mentor Award

This award was established by the Graduate School to recognize outstanding faculty who serve as trusted mentors to graduate students.ÌýSince the establishment of the award in 2007, we have recognized over 100 graduate faculty mentors. Support and enhancement of mentoring is a priority initiative of the Graduate School, in part through the Graduate Inclusive Mentoring Community (GIMC).ÌýCreated in 2023, this group seeks to offer educational opportunities and community support for mentors.Ìý

This academic year the Graduate School seeks to recognize active and involved mentors across campus, to acknowledge and appreciate their contributions. Those selected to receive the Exceptional Graduate Faculty Mentor Award (EGFMA) will receive a monetary award. Please review the eligibility and criteria carefully to ensure a complete nomination submission.

Nominee Eligibility

  • Permanently employed faculty at ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ
  • Currently advising ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ graduate students
  • Has not received the EGFMA in the last 5 years (see lists of past winners below)

Note that each graduate unit may nominate one individual per academic year.

Nomination Procedures

Complete the nomination form and upload a single nomination dossier in pdf format. The nomination must meet the requirements below. The nomination dossier will be shared with each nominee after the selection process is complete.

Nomination dossiers must be initiated by a currently active ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ graduate student or a ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ faculty/staff member.

All nomination dossiers must include a minimum of 3 letters (in one PDF):

  • letter nominating the individual, specifically addressing the criteria below
  • letter(s) of support from current/past student advisees (minimum of one current advisee letter, maximum of three current/past advisee letters)
  • letter of support from the unit chair or division headÌý

Award Criteria

Letters should demonstrate the individual’s outstanding work as an advisor of graduate students, including the following:

  • Developing exceptional mentoring relationships with individual graduate students
  • Fostering a supportive environment for graduate education within their program
  • Working to continually improve and enhance their mentoring skills

Letters may also address issues such as advisee load, quality of interaction or communication with students, the fostering of professional development, and other outstanding characteristics.

Deadlines

The award nomination form link will go live annually on Dec. 15 at 8 a.m. Mountain Time, and the deadline for nomination submissions is Feb. 1 at 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time.

The Graduate School will announce awardees by March 15 and may ask award winners to provide reflections on their mentoring practices and experiences.Ìý
