Bijoux Barbosa is the jazz bass instructor at our college working with students on sound production and projection, time/feel, intonation, technique, scales, posture, jazz repertoire, improvisation, soloing concepts, styles听and other important topics鈥攆rom history of the instrument to jazz history. These lessons are designed to provide students the tools, knowledge and vision toward becoming a successful musician.

Jazz bass students receive double bass lessons in the classical area as well as in the award-winning听精品SM在线影片 Jazz Studies Program, recognized 15 times in the past decade by DownBeat magazine for excellence in improvisation, arranging, composition听and ensemble performance.听

Eduardo 鈥淏ijoux鈥 Barbosaprovides jazz studies double bassists with excellent training in jazz and latin styles. Barbosa鈥檚 career as a bass guitarist and double bassist began in his native Brazil and continued for six years in Caracas, Venezuela, where he worked with many well-known artists.听Since arriving in Denver in 1997, Barbosa has established himself as one of the most sought-after bassists in Colorado. He is one of the top studio musicians in Colorado听and can be heard on over 300 recordings in jazz, folk, bluegrass, pop, country, blues, Brazilian, rock, fusion听and big band.听Barbosa听has performed with a wide array of stars including Herbie Mann, Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Bryan Lynch, Russell Ferrante, Chuck Loab, Gerald Albright and Lee Ritenour. The 精品SM在线影片 jazz studies program is recognized for its excellence in jazz performance, jazz theory听and scoring and arranging.听Jazz studies students have annually won numerous prestigious DownBeat awards听and our jazz ensembles have gained national acclaim and recorded several CDs.听Jazz ensemble concerts often feature world-famous guest jazz artists.听Throughout the school year, top jazz bass artists perform in the Denver/Boulder area.听Many鈥攊ncluding Victor Wooten, Rob Kassinger, John Clayton, Rob Fahie, Marc Johnson, John Goldsby, Mark Dresser, Reggie Workman and Stafford James鈥攈ave come to the College of Music to work with our double bass students.听Jazz bass players are involved in an active schedule of big band concerts on campus听and weekly combo performances off campus.

Teaching:听Barbosa and Susan Cahill听work together in guiding undergraduate jazz bass students鈥 development of technique, scales, fingerings, intonation听and general musicality.

Undergrad jazz bass studies:听The College of Music offers abachelor鈥檚 in jazz bass听that combines study in jazz and classical double bass.听A supplemental Jazz Certificate is available for undergraduate double bass majors who have taken a sufficient number of excellent courses offered by the College of Music鈥檚听Thompson听Jazz Studies Program听including Jazz Theory, Jazz Scoring and Arranging, Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble. Barbosa teaches lessons both to students pursuing jass studies听and interested bass students in the classical double bass program.

Graduate jazz bass studies degrees:听At the graduate level, master鈥檚 and doctoral programs are available for jazz bass players: the Master of Music in performance +听pedagogy and the doctorate in jazz studies.听The听College of Music is one of only a few music schools offering the jazz doctorate degree.听Jazz bass players at the graduate level enjoy a curriculum of jazz courses that include听lessons with听Barbosa.
