Student Spotlight: Native American Law Students Association (NALSA)

NALSA Event

Meet the Native American Law Students Association (NALSA) here at the University of Colorado Law School. Their mission is to provide academic, social, and cultural support to Native American students and students interested in Indian law.听

By connecting with a community inside and outside of Colorado Law, NALSA gives its members endless networking opportunities. Some of the events that they hold include their Fall Harvest and Spring feast which are in place to provide students, professors, and members of the community to connect and reflect. Throughout the school year, NALSA has brought in听 many speakers to campus to discuss legal issues prominent in Indian Country, host community events, and provide support for students to attend and participate in National NALSA events.

With many leadership opportunities, the Colorado Law NALSA chapter is highly involved within the national NALSA community. Three local board members of the organization also serve on the national board. These associations allow their members to connect with Native students all across the country and strive to provide opportunities and support for other local NALSA chapters.

How has being a member of NALSA benefited you personally and

professionally?

鈥淒uring my first year of law school NALSA was the place where I found my

community. Law school, and the legal profession in general, can often feel like an

isolating place for Native people. Having a community like NALSA allows Native

students to connect and find solidarity and support within our profession. For me,

joining NALSA meant gaining a strong group of friends that understand my

perspective and experiences and support me both inside and outside of school.

They have helped me obtain jobs and externships as well as make connections

with prominent figures in Indian Country.鈥 says the Treasurer, Siena Kalina听
