Preparing for domestic and international travel

Travel within the U.S.
- While in the U.S., nonimmigrants and lawful permanent residents are at all times.

- To board domestic flights, travelers must have a form of identification.
- Colorado does not currently issue REAL ID-compliant driver licenses and IDs to individuals who are temporarily lawfully present in the state.

International Travel听
You must have a valid travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019 to seek re-entry to the U.S.
- F-1 /F-2 Status: Travel signatures are provided at the bottom of page 2 of your I-20 under 鈥淭ravel Endorsement.鈥
- J-1/ J-2 Status: Travel signatures are provided in the lower right-hand corner of your DS-2019.
You do not need a valid travel signature to leave the U.S.; you must have a valid travel signature to re-enter the U.S.
Travel Signatures are Valid for One Year
A travel signature is valid for up to one calendar year from the most recent signature date or until the end of your I-20/DS-2019, whichever occurs first.
- Exception: If you are on鈥Post-Completion Optional Practical Trainingor STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) Extension, a travel signature is only valid within 6 months of the signature date.
If you already have a valid travel signature, you do not need to request a new signature every time you travel outside the U.S.
Consequences of Traveling Outside the U.S. Without a Valid Travel Signature
International students who travel outside the U.S. without a valid travel signature may be:
- Denied re-entry to the U.S. or
- Issued an鈥鈥and only granted temporary status in the U.S. for 30 days.
- If you are issued an I-515A, you must meet with an ISSS advisor immediately, as additional actions must be taken to extend your admission to the U.S. beyond 30 days.
Requesting a Travel Signature from ISSS
Plan ahead! ISSS recommends requesting a travel signature before you leave the U.S.
- ISSS processing time is 2-5 business days. ISSS is closed on university holidays and does not work on weekends.
Prior to issuing a travel signature, ISSS advisors confirm you are eligible to enroll in the next term. Be sure all holds limiting future enrollment are resolved at the time you request your travel signature.
- The Drop Advising Required ISSS hold will not prevent you from registering for coursework in a future term.
F-1 Visa Holders
- Complete the听鈥I-20 Reprint Request鈥e-form (available in鈥MyISSS portal.)
- An ISSS advisor will email you after they save a new I-20 with a travel signature in the Document Viewer听in your .
- Print the I-20, sign it in ink in the "Student Attestation" section at the bottom of p.1 and carry it with you when you travel to the United States.
J-1 Visa Holders
- Complete the鈥DS-2019 Reprint Request鈥e-form鈥(available in鈥MyISSS portal).
- An ISSS advisor will email you after they save a new travel signature in the Document Viewer听in your .
- Print the DS-2019, sign it in ink in the Exchange Visitor Certification section at the bottom of p.1 and carry it with you when you travel to the United States. 鈥
Winter Break Travel Return Date for Students
Plan to return to the U.S. before classes resume on Thursday, January 8, 2026 so you鈥檙e ready for the first day of in-person classes.
- Entry into the U.S. is decided by the port of entry officer.
- If you arrive after classes have resumed, you may face additional scrutiny at the U.S port of entry.

Once you鈥檝e reentered the U.S., ISSS recommends checking your I-94 to ensure Customs and Border Protection (CBP) admitted you in the correct status.听
Visa Renewal
If you must renew your visa, review the following resources prior to travel.

- Under new guidance, the Department of State will conduct of all student and exchange visitor visa applicants, including reviewing online presence. Visa applicants will be instructed to adjust the privacy settings on all their social media profiles to 鈥減ublic.鈥
- policy change effective Sept. 2, 2025, ended waivers of the visa interview for most visa applicants.
- U.S Department of State (DOS) recently for several countries鈥 new nonimmigrant visas to three months and only a single entry.
- On Oct. 10, 2025, their Sept. 6, 2025 announcement. Applicants should not schedule visa appointments in countries where they are neither citizens nor residents.
