Graduation Deadlines

Nov. 3

If you wish to purchase academic regalia for photos, participation in a recognition ceremony or attendance at the university commencement ceremony, please place your order by 11:59 p.m. (MT) Monday, Nov. 3, to ensure it arrives by winter conferral on Dec. 12. More information on how to order your regalia is available on the commencement website.

Nov. 6

Doctoral students must complete the PhD dissertation defense or final examination by this date. Notice of the examination must be provided to the Graduate School using the doctoral final examination form two weeks before the exam, a minimum of two weeks (but no more than 4 weeks) before the exam.

Nov. 13

PhD students must submit the dissertation with Thesis Approval Form (TAF) to ProQuest by this deadline. The dissertation must be submitted electronically for review and approval by Graduate School staff by the end of the business day. The single-page TAF must be uploaded as a supplemental file with the dissertation in order for the submission to be complete. Students whose dissertations are received after this deadline, or those not submitted with the TAF, must apply to graduate at the following semester's commencement.

Nov. 13

PhD and DMA students must fill out the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) online by this deadline. Learn more about the survey on the National Science Foundation’s website.

Master's students must complete the thesis defense or final examination by this date. Notice of the examination must be provided to the Graduate School using the master's final examination form two weeks before the exam. Certain units do not require an exam for non-thesis students. Please contact your department with any questions.

Master's thesis plan students must submit the thesis and Thesis Approval Form (TAF) to ProQuest by this deadline. The thesis must be submitted electronically for review and approval by Graduate School staff by the end of the business day. The single-page TAF must be uploaded as a supplemental file with the dissertation in order for the submission to be complete. Conference and research presentations don’t have to be boring! Join Audra Barber, assistant teaching professor in the Leeds School of Business, Josephine Jones Speaking Lab coach and a recent TEDxCU speaker, for a workshop designed to elevate every aspect of your presentation. You’ll gain insights into refining your delivery, designing impactful slides, approaching memorization effectively, and managing those public speaking jitters with confidence.

Lunch is provided to those that RSVP. This workshop is included in our 3MT training program but is open to all students.

Inclusive Research Mentoring (CIMER): Promoting Independence and Self-Efficacy

An important goal in any mentoring relationship is helping the mentee become independent. Yet, defining what an independent mentee knows and can do is often not articulated by the mentor or the mentee and has become increasingly complex in the context of highly collaborative projects. This training will help you define what independence looks like and develop skills to foster independence so you can become an effective mentor.

Graduate students who have not already done so must apply online to graduate through buff portal on the “apply for graduation” card in order to have the degree awarded in December. This is required even though there is no campus-wide ceremony. PhD students must enter their dissertation title as part of the online graduation application; you may update the title through the portal until this date. This title will appear on your transcript after your degree is awarded.

Effectively communicating complex research to an unspecialized audience can seem like a tall order! You've got to get the information out accurately and succinctly without losing people. But like the rest of the characteristics of a good researcher, it's a skillset that can be learned and refined. So here's a crash course based on what Samuel Ramsey (Dr. Sammy) has learned in his own adventures in SciComm.

Imposter Syndrome in Academia

Have you ever felt like an imposter? Join Leslie-Ellen Blood to discuss imposter syndrome in academia and beyond. Inclusive Research Mentoring (CIMER): Assessing Understanding

Determining whether mentees understand core concepts about the research they are doing is critical in a productive mentoring relationship—though this is surprisingly difficult to do. Developing strategies to assess how well mentees understand the purpose of their project, underlying principles and the context of their work is an important part of becoming an effective mentor. Moreover, it is important for mentors to be able to identify the causes for confusion and develop strategies to address misunderstandings.

Inclusive Research Mentoring: Aligning Expectations

One critical element of an effective mentor-mentee relationship is a shared understanding of what each person expects from the relationship. Problems between mentors and mentees often arise from misunderstandings about expectations. Importantly, expectations change over time, so frequent reflection and clear communication about expectations are needed on a regular basis.

Are you working on your dissertation, thesis, publications or papers? Join us for the August Writing Retreat—a four-day, in-person event designed to give you the time, space and support to focus on your academic writing. Each day kicks off with a quick, practical session on topics like writing strategies, overcoming procrastination and building sustainable habits. Then we dive into independent writing time. A Writing Center consultant will be available for one-on-one feedback on your work. Start your fall semester strong, build momentum and make real progress on your writing goals.

Coffee and light breakfast provided for those who RSVP (space is limited).

Graduation Deadlines

April 1

Graduate students who plan to have their degrees awarded in August but would like to be listed in the commencement program must apply online to graduate through buff portal on the “apply for graduation” card. PhD students must also enter their dissertation title as part of the graduation application. Though you plan to participate in a May ceremony, please select August 2025 as the semester of graduation if that is when your degree will be awarded.

April 8

Doctoral students must complete the PhD dissertation defense or final examination by this date. Notice of the examination must be provided to the Graduate School using the doctoral final examination form two weeks before the exam a minimum of two weeks (but no more than 4 weeks) before the exam.

April 15

PhD students must submit the dissertation with Thesis Approval Form (TAF) to ProQuest by this deadline. The dissertation must be submitted electronically for review and approval by Graduate School staff by the end of the business day. The single page TAF must be uploaded as a supplemental file with the dissertation in order for the submission to be complete. Students whose dissertations are received after this deadline, or those not submitted with the TAF, must apply to graduate at the following semester's commencement.

April 15

PhD and DMA students must fill out the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) online by this deadline. Learn more about the survey on the NSF website.

April 21

Graduation Deadlines

March 1

Graduate students who have not already done so must apply online to graduate through buff portal on the “apply for graduation” card to have the degree awarded in May. This is required whether or not you plan to attend the university-wide ceremony. This title will appear on your transcript after your degree is awarded.
