Forging a sustainable future for the FRPA
Dear faculty colleagues, Ìý
¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ is undertaking a transition to a modernized platform for the Faculty Report of Professional Activities (FRPA), which plays a central role in ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ’s annual faculty merit review process. This effort is not changing the FRPA process itself, but it is focused on ensuring the technology that undergirds the process is sustainable, efficient, and adaptable for current and future needs. The FRPA facilitates the reporting of teaching, scholarly and creative work, research and professional expertise, leadership and service activities, international engagement and outreach work, and other significant contributions. This information is not only critical to the annual merit evaluation process for faculty, it also supports campus needs ranging from grant reporting and program reviews to media requests and the CU Experts online web profiles.Ìý Ìý
This transition supports ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ’s campus priorities of fostering faculty success; scaling research and creative work excellence; and aligning our resources and infrastructure to our mission. A modernized FRPA platform will better capture and reflect the diversity of faculty contributions, reduce administrative burdens,Ìýand deliver data more reliably to advance these priorities across campus.Ìý
A campuswide task force of faculty and staff was seated with representatives from the Boulder Faculty Assembly (BFA), Staff Council, schools and colleges, and research institutes. The task force is supported by a working group comprising staff and faculty from the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) and the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and organized an OIT project management team. Over the spring and summer 2025, the task force along with the working group helped define the key requirements for a modern system. Additional research was also conducted on practices at peer institutions to ensure ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ’s approach is informed by national benchmarks and best practices. A smaller steering committee and Request for Proposals (RFP) evaluation team are now guiding the selection of a vendor. Over the fall and into spring 2026, third-party vendors will be invited to demonstrate their platform solutions, and faculty input will remain central throughout the transition to ensure the new technology meets the needs of the campus community.Ìý
It is important to note that the 2025 FRPA process will continue as usual in FRPA Online, with no changes to faculty reporting requirements for the 2025 reporting cycle. The work now underway is about preparing for the future, ensuring that the technology supporting this essential process better reflects the needs of our faculty community. You can learn more about this project on the FRPA Transition Project page.Ìý
The FRPA is not just a report to be filled out once a year; it is ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ’s only centralized process for gathering timely and consistent information directly from faculty about the full scope of their work.ÌýÌý
As we move forward, we encourage faculty and staff to share questions and feedback through the . This feedback will help guide our engagement with potential vendors on improvements for the FRPA platform. The FRPA process has always been about documenting the incredible breadth and impact of faculty work at ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ, and with your input, we can ensure that the supporting technological platform makes that process smoother, more efficient, and increasingly valuable for all.Ìý
